About The Ball Grid

A daily Premier League football trivia game.

What it is

The Ball Grid publishes one new Premier League puzzle every day. You are given a 3×3 grid where every square sits at the intersection of a row and a column — a club, a season, a statistical achievement — and you name a player who satisfies both at once. Everyone in the world gets the same grid on the same day, so a score is directly comparable with everyone else’s.

There are two ways to play. Classic Grid gives you time to think and rewards rare, correct answers — picking an obscure player who still qualifies scores higher than picking the obvious one. Rapid Fire is the same idea against the clock. Full scoring details are on the How to Play page.

It is free, there is nothing to install, and you do not need an account to play. An account only exists so your streak and scores follow you between devices.

Where the data comes from

Every grid is built from a database of 19 Premier League seasons, from 2007/08 through 2025/26, covering 4,066 players across 43 clubs. Squad lists, shirt numbers and biographical data come from the OpenFootball project, which publishes under a public-domain (CC0) licence; appearance and scoring statistics come from openly published Premier League season data.

A player is only ever accepted for a square if the underlying record shows they met both criteria within the season named on the board — not at some other point in their career. Grids are validated against that dataset before publication, so every square is guaranteed to have at least one correct answer.

Getting it wrong

Football data is messy, and we would rather fix an error than defend it. If you are confident a player should have been accepted for a square and was not, or that an accepted answer is wrong, please say so — tell us the date, the square and the player and it can be checked against the source data. Corrections are welcome and they do get made.

Who makes it

The Ball Grid is independently built and run — it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Premier League or any football club. All club names and trademarks belong to their respective owners and are used here only to describe factual playing records.
