Sixty-six attempts. Zero correct. Fifty-seven possible answers.
On 20 August 2026, The Ball Grid published a Classic Grid built on the 2024/25 Premier League season. One of its nine squares asked for a player with 1 or more assists who had also picked up 7 or more yellow cards.
Sixty-six people tried it. Not one of them got it right.
That is the only square in more than twenty thousand recorded answers with a 0% success rate at any meaningful volume. And the reason it stands out is not that it was unfair. It is that it was entirely fair, and people still could not do it.
Checking the square against the season dataset, 57 different players in 2024/25 recorded at least one assist and at least seven bookings. This was not a trick or a broken cell. The answers were everywhere:
Morgan Rogers had ten assists. He was one of the most talked-about players in the league that season. He was also booked ten times, and nobody made the connection.
Football fans carry an enormous amount of information, but it is stored in a particular shape. We remember goals. We remember signings, transfer fees, famous nights. We remember, roughly, who is good.
What almost nobody stores is disciplinary record. Yellow cards are the least memorable statistic in football, because a booking is a moment that interrupts the thing you actually came to watch. It is noted and then discarded. Ask a supporter how many goals their striker scored last season and you will usually get a number. Ask how many times their midfielder was booked and you will get a shrug.
The data across every grid bears this out. Squares involving yellow cards are answered correctly 40.4% of the time, against 59.8% for clean sheets and 59.2% for nationality. Only age-based categories are harder.
There is a second thing happening here, and it is more interesting than the first.
"1+ Assists" sounds like the easiest condition imaginable. Almost any outfield player manages one assist across a season. In isolation it eliminates hardly anyone.
But that is exactly what makes it hard. A loose criterion gives your memory nothing to grip. "20+ goals" hands you a shortlist of five names instantly. "1+ assists" hands you four hundred players and no way to rank them. Combine that with a statistic nobody tracks, and the square stops being a recall problem and becomes a search problem across a space too large to search.
People do not fail this square because they lack knowledge. They fail it because the knowledge they have is indexed the wrong way.
The players who solve yellow-card squares tend to do the same thing: they stop thinking about statistics and start thinking about player type.
Nobody memorises booking counts. But everybody knows which players commit fouls. Holding midfielders who break up play, aggressive full-backs, centre-backs who defend in open space — that is where the cards accumulate. Caicedo, Ugarte, Lukić, Joelinton. Once you ask "who fouls a lot?" rather than "who was booked seven times?", the square becomes answerable, because you are querying something your memory actually holds.
The assists condition then barely matters. Any regular starter clears one assist.
That is the whole trick, and it generalises: when a category is one your memory does not index, translate it into one that it does.
